Who would have thought that a simple doll makeover challenge, would evolve into an international annual tradition where dolls are transformed into one-of-a-kind beauties and supported by millions of fans around the Unibarse?
Miss Unibarse began as a creative project that combined our love for pageants (Miss Universe), modeling and beauty make-overs (Top Model) and photography (F&G Photography).
We launched Miss Unibarse in summer of 2005. We chose the city of Shang Hai in China to be the host country with it's colorful traditions and new found interest in the world of beauty and pageantry. We began with 40 dolls, each 'dollegate' represented a different country and competed in 4 categories wearing their beautiful national costumes, presentation dresses, sexy swimsuits and elegant evening gowns. Our friends became our first set of online judges and after a few weeks of competition, a few of the notable entries started to emerge including Mexico for Best National Costume, Namibia for Best in Swimsuit, Venezuela for Best in Evening Gown, United States for Miss Photogenic and Panama for Miss Congeniality. At the end of the competition, our panel of judges chose a dusky and striking beauty from Namibia to be the very first Miss Unibarse winner. Completing the winner circle that year were 'dollegates' from Venezuela (1st Runner-Up), Chile (2nd Runner-Up), Dominican Republic (3rd Runner-Up) and Iceland (4th Runner-Up).
Little did we know that this innocent, creative and fun endeavor would attract so many supporters from all corners of the 'Unibarse'. Among them are countries from mysterious and faraway nations like Qatar, United Kingdom,Mexico, Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Chile, Ireland, Colombia, Singapore, United States, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, United Arab Emirates, Namibia, Brazil, India, Canada and the Philippines.
In 2006, we chose Windhoek, Namibia to be the host country because we felt that Miss Unibarse's journey should always lead her back home, hence a tradition of selecting the host country began. There were 52 countries represented that year with first time 'dollegates' from Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and United Kingdom. This was also the first year we included the 'Fast Track' competition in which any dollegate who scored the highest in any of the 4 preliminary competitions (National Costume, Presentation, Swimsuit and Evening Gown) and the dollegate who garnered the most internet votes (People's Choice) will automatically advance into the Top 25. It was a great competition with the Asian dollegates dominating the top 10 in every category but as the dust settled, the very first set of Fast Track winers were Trinidad and Tobago for Best National Costume, Honduras for Best Press Presentation (Miss Photogenic), Zimbabwe for Best in Swimsuit, Thailand for Best in Evening Gown and Indonesia for 'People's Choice'. Our special award for Miss Congeniality that year went to a doe-eyed beauty from Denmark. By the end of a three month journey, Japan won over the judges hearts and became the very first Asian Miss Unibarse. Ironically, the Asian domination continued within the winner circle that year with the exception of Ukraine (1st Runner-Up). Completing the 'Asian' domination were dollegates from Korea (2nd Runner-Up), Indonesia (3rd Runner-Up) and China (4th Runner-Up).
In 2007, the island of Japan hosted the festivities in their beautiful city of Osaka. There were 60 participants that year with a slew of first time dollegates from Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Hong Kong, Kazakhastan, Macau, Martinique, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Palau, Singapore, Tanzania and Vietnam. This is also the first year we invited fans and supporters to participate in our event in which we received entries as far away as Spain, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Philippines, Canada, Puerto Rico, Macau and Thailand. During the preliminary competition the 'Fast Track' winners were Nicaragua for Best National Costume, Palau for Best Press Presentation (Miss Photogenic), United States for Best in Swimsuit, Puerto Rico for Best in Evening Gown and Indonesia for 'People's Choice' their second in a row. Miss Congeniality was won by the beautiful dollegate from Colombia. With excitement building up on stage, backstage Miss Unibarse and it's organizers took part in "Gender Blender" a documentary that featured two members of the Miss Unibarse family in their quest to win their own beauty title. By the end of the competition, an exotic dollegate from Palau edged out 59 other dollegates to claim the world's most prestigious title of Miss Unibarse followed by Aruba (1st Runner-Up), Venezuela (2nd runner-Up), Panama (3rd Runner-Up) and Chile (4th Runner-Up). Among our esteemed panel of judges that year were Daniel Miagany (Reality TV Actor and Model), Tony Napoli (Comedienne and former "My Life on the D-List with Kathy Griffin" co-star), Bea Allesandra Ramos (Miss US-Philippines 2006), Alvin Paris (Talent Manager and Mabuhay Beauties Correspondent), Daphne Joy (Miss US-Philippines 2007) and the exquisite and beautiful Natalie Glebova, Miss Universe 2005 from Canada.

Local, international bloggers and reporters from United Kingdom, Colombia, Vietnam, Venezuela, United States and the Philippines soon began to write about Miss Unibarse on their blogs, newspapers and magazines articles. Global Beauties and Pawee's Powerhouse of Beauty, the world's leading beauty pageant websites featured a short article on Miss Unibarse on their websites, a first in doll pageant history!
In 2008, Melekoek, Palau hosted the Miss Unibarse pageant which attracted 76 dollegates including first time nations such as Afghanistan, Albania, Croatia, Estonia, Guam, Holland, Iran Ireland, Israel, Malawi, Montenegro, Nepal, Nigeria, Poland, Seychelles, Tahiti, Uganda, Vanuatu and Zambia. This was also the first year we included an advocacy component within our Top 25 where each dollegate advocates for a cause relevant to their country of origin. With a larger and more competitive group winning the 'Fast Track' spot became even more essential to secure a spot in semi-finals. The eventual winners were Nicaragua for Best National Costume, their second in a row, United States for Best Press Presentation (Miss Photogenic), Dominican Republic for Best in Swimsuit, Puerto Rico for Best in Evening Gown and Philippines for 'People's Choice'. A dusky and beautiful dollegate from Malawi wins the Miss Congeniality award for the first time. This year marks our selection of the "Continental Queens" to help further promote the causes of the Miss Unibarse Organization in all corners of the Unibarse. The jurors were our supportive fans and they have chosen the following dollegates to be the winners: Korea (Asia), South Africa (Africa), Trinidad and Tobago (Carribean), Ireland (Europe), Afghanistan (Middle East), Canada (North America), Paraguay (South America), Australia (Oceana). The overall winner that year was the heavy favorite from the Dominican Republic, the first Latina to ever win the title. Notable first time entries from Montenegro and Afghanistan placed (1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up) respectively while Kenya (3rd runner-Up) and Philippines (4th Runner-Up) completes this multi-racial winner circle. A few noteable supporters and online judges that year included: Lucian Mathis (International Fashion Designer), Heidi Ann Riego (TV Personality), Priscilla Perrales (Miss International 2007), Tamara Almeida (Miss World Brazil 2007 and semi-finalist at Miss World), Henrique Fontes (Drector of Globalbeauties) and another Canadian beauty Jessica Trisko (Miss Earth 2007)

This year marks our fifth and most ambitious year to date with over 80 entries, a competition that spans over 6 months and a platform that promotes equality for all our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Our competition began in the summer as the world wide web chose their favorites from 80 beautiful dollegates into the Top 50, forty will be voted upon by fans while the remaining 10 will be chosen by members of the Miss Unibarse Organization. The Top 50 will then compete in five (5) preliminary competitons, four (4) of which (National Costume, Press Presentation, Swimsuit, Evening Gown) will be judged by a high profile list of international and local celebrities including power couple stylist and model, Daniel Miagany and Emmy Award Nominated choreographer and bad-ass reality star Glenn Douglas Packard, Missosologist and medical profesional Rajat Dutta, Transgender Icon and Catwalk winner Asia Vitale and two former Miss Universe winners from the USA, Chelsi Smith (Miss Universe 1995) and Brook Antoinette Mahealani Lee (Miss Universe 1997). The final category is the People's Choice, where members of the world wide web community votes for their favorite for the crown. By the end of the preliminaries, the standouts and fast track award winners were: Panama (Best in National Costume), Egypt (Miss Photogenic), Venezuela (Best in Swimsuit), Korea (Best in Evening Gown) and Philippines for (People's Choice). This year's Continental Queen winners were: South Africa (Africa), Philippines (Asia), Grenada (Carribean), Albania (Europe), Egypt (Middle East), Mexico (North America), Brazil (South America) and New Zealand (Oceana). Five lucky dollegates were also chosen by the organization to act as Ambassadors of the Miss Unibarse Organization, these five dollegates will represent the 5 pillars in the crown representing the values and principles the Miss Unibarse Organization is based on. This year's winners were: Nigeria (Ambassador of Peace), Greece (Ambassador of Goodwill), Italy (Ambassador of Equality), Japan (Ambassador of Charity) and Lebanon (Ambassador of Justice). This year's Miss Congeniality award, selected by the directors, was won by a bubbly dollegate from Estonia.
This year's final 5 were: Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria, Egypt and Venezuela. This year's we asked fans to send us a final question to be asked to the final 5 and the winning question came from our very own judge, Asia Vitale in which she asked, "If we agree that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" then why is the U.S. divided in regards to same-sex unions/marriage?". All top 5 directors answered superbly from their 'hearts and with their minds', in which we hope made you more aware of the global injustice our gay brothers and sisters are facing, it is safe to say that there were definitely no 'You Tube-Prejean' moments in this pageant! As the scores stared to come in from literally all across the Unibarse (Mexico, Lebanon, India, Philippines, United Kingdom, Fiji, Venezuela, Australia and the USA) the striking and calm beauty of Korea won the 2009 Miss Unibarse crown followed by Nigeria (1st Runner-Up), Egypt (2nd Runner-Up), Venezuela (3rd Runner-Up) and New Zealand (4th Runner-Up).

When we started Miss Unibarse, our sole purpose is to share our love, passion, creativity and imagination to our friends, not realizing that the whole world would soon join in on the fun. Our innocent, creative endeavor has united all of us and brought us closer together in understanding and spirit, something that we didn't expect but welcomed wholeheartedly. As you can see dolls are not only for kids, it is for everyone who dares to push the limits of imagination and creativity, to create a positive change in this world and for anyone, who wants to journey back to our childhood and return to inocence.
