Backstage at the National Costume Competition with Brazil and Colombia

Brazil and Colombia Set to Participate in the National Costume Event Tomorrow

No time to waste, Miss Unibarse Brazil and Miss Unibarse Colombia barely had a chance to catch their breath as they were whisked away from the airport terminal into a private limo straight to Tokyo Dome where the doll-egates have been busy rehearsing for the national costume competition set to begin tomorrow! < Miss Unibarse Brazil, wore a baby blue faux fur jacket with a matching pink tube dress! A perfect combination for her bubbly and fun personality! Miss Unibarse Colombia proudly waved her Senorita Colombia sash before a rowdy group of supporters before wearing her official Miss Unibarse sash. Brazil and Colombia enthusiastically waved and smiled to their fans who eagerly and patiently waited for their arrival. With their costumes in hand, the two had to run to the stage to catch up with the rehearsal already in progress. Best of luck to the latest additions!

TOKYO RISING: AUGUST 31, 2007

Find out this week's 'Modern Geisha's' at Miss Unibarse! There are a lot of movers and shakers but one thing is certain anything can happen! Special thanks to the beautiful and talented Miss Ace Yang, our special correspondent covering the event for the inside scoop about this year's doll-egates!

(Writing tribute to the cow that bashed OFW’s)

In all my world travels (Mexico and Canada) I learned that beauty is in the eyes, not just eye, of the beholder. But while I was having an expensive ($15.00) dinner at a fancy restaurant (Frit de Poulet de Kentucky) here in Japan, I realized that all the beauties are in town! As I reviewed the latest arrivals for Miss Unibarse on my high-tech gadget (low resolution print-out of candidates page) I came up with a some sort of a new set of favorites.

CUT AS A BUTTON
"These girls, you just want to pinch their cheeks!!!"

Angola
Brazil
Indonesia (ok, Rihanna!)

BEAUTIFUL ANGELS
"I think they are angels…"

Australia
Canada

SEXY as HELL
"The eyes say it all… especially # 3"

Nicaragua
Curacaco
Mozambique (there's something about bronze eye shadow)
Czech Republic (say what you want, she's oozing sexuality! or she's just oozing something...)

FIERCE
"Daaaaayyummmm Gurl!!! Work it!"

United States
Venezuela
Lebanon (she's new and she brung it!)

HOT and DANGEROUS
"They say they’re recovered… I’ll just keep my mace handy, if you don’t mind."

Palau (very toned physique and right hook to match)
Mauritius (you can take the girl out of the ghetto but...)

Back to you in headquarters! I'm going back to my beauty day at the spa (back to my hotel bathroom to take a shower, put hemorrhoid cream on my eyebags and tweeze out my facial hair).

Missing Nicaraguan Beauty Queen and Missing Bedazzled National Costumes

The beautiful and statuesque beauties from Venezuela and Germany met with the organizers of Miss Unibarse today to discuss their missing national costumes! Apparently, the two glam-a-dolls participated in yet another doll pageant weeks before the start of Miss Unibarse and left their costumes with their other beautiful amiga Miss Nicaragua.

Miss Nicaragua was so kind and generous that she insisted that she would bring their costumes with her since she is also competing in Miss Unibarse. The gla-ma-dolls agreed and boarded the first flight from Mexico, the host country of Miss Doll Maja Internationtal, to Japan! It is now 24 hours away from the National Costume competition and Miss Unibarse Nicaragua and Venezuela's and Germany's national costumes is nowhere in sight! Will the two glama-a-dolls be escorted out of the competition for not having their costumes in on time or will they have to hot glue feathered boas and bedazzle their way to a last minute costume change? Please stay tuned for up to the minute developments as the 'missing feathered headpiece' saga continues...

Crowd Favorite to Win the Crown Missing

From the moment her photo was posted on the website, fans of Miss Unibarse from all around the world chose and predicted Miss Unibarse Nicaragua to win it all...but how is that possible if she is nowhere to be found in Japan? Miss Doll Nicaragua headquarters wired MU Organization a message stating that Miss Doll Nicaragua boarded the wrong flight and ended up arriving in Gapan, a city in the Philippines. When she realized that there were no sushi to be eaten anywhere, she boarded the next flight back to Nicaragua. She was later sent to board another flight for Narita, from there she is scheduled to take the bullet train to Tokyo. She is scheduled to arrive Friday afternoon, just in time for the preliminary competition for their official headshots and national costume competition. Will this enigmatic beauty make it in on time or will she be sent back for missing the arrival deadline? Stay tuned for more as the 'missing beauty queen' saga continues.

True 'Airheads' Dissing the Beautiful Blond Teen 'Airhead' from South Carolina

Rico here with yet another update on Miss Unibarse that Pauly & I are judging…yes, the doll pageant.

You’ve probably heard about all the hoopla surrounding Miss South Carolina’s eloquence or lack thereof . Well, these anthropomorphized figurines are weighing in on the issue and not everything they say is studded in glittery rhinestones. For example, Miss Unibarse Korea had a few biting remarks from what appears to be the Pot-Calling-The-Kettle-Black handbook, “Some Americans might not be able to locate the US on the map, but they know an air head lives in South Carolina.” Ouch!!

But wait… aren’t doll heads…. uh…. nevermind.

“Even my grandmother speaks better than her and she doesn’t even have vocal cords!” she spewed as she continued her minuscule tirade. In reality, she’s technically correct. Grandma’s a doll, too. Meanwhile, other contestants had a more diplomatic stance. Take Miss Unibarse France, for example: “English is only my eighth language, so I understand the nervousness when speaking before others.”

Her sympathy continued, “I nevertheless applaud her for her efforts to portray beauty in a positive light.”

Excuse me as a I yawn. (Save it for the competition, Frenchy!)

'Diss-claimer' sentiments expressed in this article does not truly reflect the personal views of people from Korea, France and the Miss Unibarse Organization. To find out more about who wrote this hella funny article please visit his wonderful website at FruitSalad.

"Ordem e Progresso' (Order and Progress) Welcome to the Beautifula land of Brazil

Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil or República Federativa do Brasil, is the largest and most populous country in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world in both area and population. Its territory covers 8,514,877 km² between central South America and the Atlantic Ocean, and it is the eastern-most country of the Americas.

It borders Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and the department of French Guiana to the north, Uruguay to the south, Argentina and Paraguay to the southwest, Bolivia and Peru to the west, and Colombia to the northwest. The only South American countries not bordered by Brazil are Ecuador and Chile. The Brazilian coastline covers 7,367 km to the east. Numerous archipelagos are part of the Brazilian territory, such as Penedos de São Pedro e São Paulo, Fernando de Noronha, Trindade e Martim Vaz and Atol das Rocas. A tropical climate is predominant. In the south of the country, subtropical climate prevails. Brazil is cut through by the Equator and Tropic of Capricorn. It is home to varied fauna and flora and extensive natural resources. Brazil was colonized by Portugal from 1500 until its independence in 1822. The republican system has been adopted since 1889, although its parliament dates back to 1824, when the first constitution was ratified. Its current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federative Republic. The Federation is formed by the indissoluble association of the States, the Federal District, and the Municipalities. There are currently 26 States and 5,564 Municipalities.

The Brazilian population tends to concentrate along the coastline in large urban centers. While Brazil has one of the largest populations in the world, population density is low and the inner continental land has large areas of low population. It is a multiracial country composed of European, Amerindian, African and Asian elements. The official language is Portuguese, and it is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas. Catholicism is the predominant religion, though Protestant communities have experienced significant growth in the last decades. Brazil has the largest Roman Catholic population in the world.

The Brazilian economy is large and developed, with mature manufacturing, mining and agriculture sectors. Technology and services also play an important role in the economy, and are growing rapidly. Brazil is a net exporter, having benefited from free trade reforms in the 1990s. Brazil's economy outweighs that of all other South American countries.

'Fruity' Fashion Police Charges Fashion Felony on 3 Miss Unibarse Delegates

Rico here reporting the latest on Miss Unibarse —yes the doll pageant. In case you don’t already know, Pauly & I have been asked to judge Miss U because… well… we’re two flaming homos in dire need of more rinestones in our fagulous tiara of gayness.

(Wow, if I only had a nickel for each superlative I crank out…:)

We just received word that a few more contestants have already arrived at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, the location of the event of the miniature contest. Always the stunner, we saw Miss Unibarse South Africa virtually gliiiiide down the tarmac. Work it!!

Unfortunately, when South Africa left so did all the class. I’m not sure what was going on in the empty heads of the following two, but I think they ought to be incarcerated in Tokyo fashion jail.

Miss Unibarse Czech Republic arrived in what can only be described as a pair of “Daisy Dukes”. Nice….. if you’re competing for Miss Uni-whore. Miss Daisy also decided to wear a cross-your-heart contraption that almost resulted in a nip-slip given the Tokyo breeze. It’s clear that good taste has Czecked out of this arrival.

To add insult to injury…. and I use the term loosely…. Miss Unibarse Singapore arrived in what appeared to be a hooded executioner’s getup. Clearly the last person she terminated was her stylist. She might be here to finish off her competition, but that outfit just might have killed that aspiration. And, oh yeah….Miss Singapore also had a nip-slip. Unfortunately, for the horny bastards out there (fortunately for us?), some foliage blocked the areolic mishap.

Can you believe I’m writing about something that never happened? Can you believe you even read this far?

The Fascinating Hybrid Cultures of Macau

The Macau Special Administrative Region, commonly known as Macau or Macao is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong.

Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century. After the Opium War in 1841, most of the foreign merchants in Macau left for Hong Kong, and as a result business and economic activities in Macau declined. Administered by Portugal until the handover in 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China. Since then Macau has developed industries such as textiles, electronics and toys, as well as a notable tourist industry, which boasts a wide range of hotels, resorts, stadiums, restaurants and casinos. What remains unchanged through Macau's history is Macau's strong economic links with Hong Kong, one of the East Asian Tigers and the Pearl River Delta region in mainland China. With a good foundation and infrastructure, Macau provides good financial and banking services, staff training, transport and communications support.

The mixing of Chinese and Portuguese cultures and religious traditions for more than 4 centuries has left Macau with a very inimitable collection of holidays, festivals and events. The biggest tournament of the year is the Macau Formula Three Grand Prix in November, when the main streets in the Peninsula of Macau become a racetrack. Many Formula One drivers won here earlier in their careers; among them, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard and Takuma Sato before taking part in Monaco Grand Prix. For other important yearly events, it includes the Macau Arts festival in March, the International Fireworks Display Contest in September, the International Music festival in October and/or November, and the Macau International Marathon in December.

The Lunar Chinese New Year is a public holiday and celebration launched in late January or early February every year. The Pou Tai Un Temple in Taipa is the place for the Feast of the Earth god Tou Tei in February. The Procession of the Passion of Our Lord is a well-known Catholic rite and journey, which travels from Igreja de Santo Agostinho to Igreja da Sé Catedral‎, also taking place in February. A-Ma Temple, which honours the Goddess of seafarers and fishermen; is in full swing in April with many congratulant worshippers during the A-Ma festival. To look on dancing dragons at the Feast of the Drunken Dragon and twinkling-clean Buddhas at the Feast of Bathing of Lord Buddha in May is common. In Coloane Village, the Taoist god Tam Kong is also honoured in the same day. Dragon Boat festival is brought into play on Nam Van Lakes in June and Hungry Ghosts' festival, in late August and/or early September every year. All events and festivities basically come to an end with Winter Solstice in December annually. With significant influences from Southeast Asia and the Lusophone world, local cooking in Macau consists of a blend of southern Chinese and Portuguese cuisines. Many unique dishes resulted from the spice blends that the wives of Portuguese sailors used in an attempt to replicate European dishes. Its ingredients and seasonings include those from Europe, Latin America, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, as well as local Chinese ingredients. Common cooking techniques include baking, grilling and roasting. It is renowned for its flavour-blending culture. Typically, Macanese food is seasoned with various spices and flavours including turmeric, coconut milk, cinnamon and bacalhau, giving special aromas and tastes Famous dishes include Galinha à Portuguesa, Galinha à Africana (African chicken), Bacalhau, Macanese Chili Shrimps and stir-fry curry crab. The most popular snack is pork chop bun. The most popular dessert is ginger milk and Portuguese-style egg tart.Macau International Music Festival - MIMF is basically conducted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government every year.[66] The 20th anniversary of the MIMF is celebrated with a touch of romanticism. Jazz, Classical music, electronica, Chinese folk-pop, rock and fado will fill Macau's autumn nights with magic. The eclectic programme of 28 performances promises to delight Macau audiences, accustomed to the festival's annual offering of some of the best music from all over the world.

Land of Ice, Water and a Few Doll Beauties

Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle, which passes through the small island of Grímsey off Iceland's northern coast, but not through mainland Iceland. Unlike neighbouring Greenland, Iceland is considered to be a part of Europe, not of North America, though geologically, the island belongs to both continents. Because of cultural, economic and linguistic similarities, Iceland in many contexts is also included in Scandinavia. It is the world's eighteenth-largest island, and Europe's second largest island following Great Britain.

Approximately eleven percent of the island is glaciated.[2] Many fjords punctuate its 4,970 kilometre (3,088 mi) long coastline, which is also where most towns are situated because the island's interior, the Highlands of Iceland, is a cold and uninhabitable combination of sands and mountains. The major towns are the capital Reykjavík, Keflavík, where the international airport is situated, and Akureyri. The island of Grímsey on the Arctic Circle contains the northernmost habitation of Iceland.[3]

The only native land mammal when humans arrived was the arctic fox. It came to the island at the end of the ice age, walking over the frozen sea. There are no native reptiles or amphibians on the island. There are around 1,300 known species of insects in Iceland, which is rather low compared with other countries (there are about 925,000 known species in the world). During the last Ice Age almost all of the country was covered by permanent snow and glacier ice. This explains the low number of living species in Iceland. When humans arrived, birch forest and woodland probably covered 25–40% of Iceland’s land area, but soon the settlers started to remove the trees and forests to create fields and grazing land. During the early twentieth century the forests were at their minimum and were almost wiped out of existence. The planting of new forests has increased the number of trees since, but this can not be compared with the original forests. Some of those planted forests have included new foreign species.

TOKYO RISING: AUGUST 20, 2007

TOKYO RISING our very own version of the 'HOT PICK'S' seen in every single pageant in the Unibarse. Tokyo Rising is made in part courtesy of our very special correspondent covering the event. Known to the world as a 'modern gasia' she is an accomplished international pageant queen with numerous titles and a melodic voice to boot!

Please keep in mind these doesn't reflect the opinions of the Miss Unibarse Organization at the same time has no bearing on the judge's scores. Have fun and hope to see you on the top...of the list that is!

Hello everyone!

It is an exciting time here in Tokyo. I just finished my seaweed facial and… (inaudible: ha? Ano? Salad yon? It wasn’t for my face?) …uhm... and I had to check who else has arrived. After looking at the gallery of candidates and meeting some of them in the hotel lobby... (inaudible: I DID NOT STALK THEM! excuse me but i'm working here!)... I have some instant favorites not only for their looks but their personality and characters. Here’s my top 10 so far…

1. USA… a great mix of ethnicity! Very Vanessa Williams, but without a naked past.
2. Venezuela… BECAUSE! Just look at her!
3. Nicaragua… she is regal and well poised. I don’t understand half of what she says but her
composure speaks volumes.
4. Indonesia… I love their dishes! I tried my first authentic Indonesian food in San Francisco
and we had this dish that’s like Filipino “kare-kare” with peanut sauce and vegetables,
and we also had this roasted beef, I think it was roasted and…
5. Australia / Canada… they are too darn wholesome I feel sick! I think Canada almost became a
nun and Australia was a Sunday school teacher or something like that.
6. Curacao… when she looks at you its like she has the power to make you want to talk to her.
Again, I don’t really understand what she says but that’s what she does with her eyes.
7. Angola… she looks so shy! You just want to hold her hand!
8. Palau… because if I don’t pick her I’m afraid she might kick my asssssssssparagus.
9. Mauritius… because I if I don’t pick her I’m afraid she might kick my assssssssssparagus.
10. India… because she looks like she would pray for me if Palau and Mauritius kicks my… you
know what.
That’s all for now. Back to you at headquarters! (inaudible: Where's my assistant! Where's my cucumber salad like what i had last night? ha? ano? It wasnt a salad?)

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Vietnam extends approximately 331,688 km² (128,066 sq mi) in area. The area of the country running along its international boundaries is 4,639 km (2,883 mi). The topography consists of hills and densely forested mountains, with level land covering no more than 20%. Mountains account for 40% of the area, with smaller hills accounting for 40% and tropical forests 42%. The northern part of the country consists mostly of highlands and the Red River Delta. Phan Xi Păng, located in Lào Cai province, is the highest mountain in Vietnam at 3,143 m (10,312 ft). The south is divided into coastal lowlands, Annamite Chain peaks, extensive

forests, and poor soil. Comprising five relatively flat plateaus of basalt soil, the highlands account for 16% of the country's arable land and 22% of its total forested land.

Ha Long Bay, a World Heritage Site

The delta of the Red River (also known as the Sông Hồng), a flat, triangular region of 3,000 square kilometers, is smaller but more intensely developed and more densely populated than the Mekong River Delta. Once an inlet of the Gulf of Tonkin, it has been filled in by the enormous alluvial deposits of the rivers over a period of millennia, and it advances one hundred meters into the Gulf annually. The Mekong delta, covering about 40,000 square kilometers, is a low-level plain not more than three meters above sea level at any point and criss-crossed by a maze of canals and rivers. So much sediment is carried by the Mekong's various branches and tributaries that the delta advances sixty to eighty meters into the sea every year.
Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate, with humidity averaging 84% throughout the year.

However, because of differences in latitude and the marked variety of topographical relief, the climate tends to vary considerably from place to place. During the winter or dry season, extending roughly from November to April, the monsoon winds usually blow from the northeast along the China coast and across the Gulf of Tonkin, picking up considerable moisture; consequently the winter season in most parts of the country is dry only by comparison with the rainy or summer season. The average annual temperature is generally higher in the plains than in the mountains and plateaus.

Welcome to the 'Lion City' Singapore

Singapore consists of 63 islands, including the main island itself. There are two connections to Johor — the man-made Johor-Singapore Causeway in the north, and the Tuas Second Link in the west. Jurong Island, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa are the largest of Singapore's many smaller islands. The highest natural point of Singapore is Bukit Timah Hill (166 metres, 538 ft).

The urban area used to only be concentrated on the south of Singapore, around the mouth of the Singapore River and what is now the Downtown Core, while the rest of the land was undeveloped tropical rainforest or used for agriculture. Since the 1960s, the government has constructed new residential towns in outlying areas, resulting in an entirely built-up urban landscape. The Urban Redevelopment Authority is the government agency responsible for urban planning.

Singapore has an on-going land reclamation project with earth obtained from its own hills, the sea-bed, and neighbouring countries. As a result, Singapore's land area grew from 581.5 square kilometres (224.5 sq mi) in the 1960s to 699.3 square kilometres (269.1 sq mi) today, and may grow by another 100 square kilometres (38.6 sq mi) by 2030. Many of the smaller islands have been expanded and joined together through land reclamation in order to form larger, more functional islands, such as in the case of Jurong Island.
Singapore Botanical Gardens, a 67.3-hectare (166 acre) botanical garden in Singapore that includes the National Orchid Garden, which has a collection of more than 3,000 species of orchids. Under the Köppen climate classification system, Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinct seasons. Its climate is characterised by uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Temperatures range from 22 °C to 34 °C (72°–93 °F). On average, the relative humidity is around 90% in the morning and 60% in the afternoon. During prolonged heavy rain, relative humidity often reaches 100%. The lowest and highest temperatures recorded in its maritime history are 18.4 °C (65.1 °F) and 37.8 °C (100.0 °F) respectively. The highest wind speed recorded is 150 km/h on 26 May 2007. June and July are the hottest months, while November and December make up the wetter monsoon season. From August to October, there is often haze, sometimes severe enough to prompt public health warnings, due to bushfires in neighbouring Indonesia. Singapore does not observe daylight savin time or a summer time zone change. The length of the day is nearly constant year round due to the country's location near the equator.

About 23% of Singapore's land area consists of forest and nature reserves. Urbanization has eliminated many areas of former primary rainforest, with the only remaining area of primary rainforest being Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. A variety of parks are maintained with human intervention, such as the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Without natural freshwater rivers and lakes, the primary domestic source of water supply in Singapore is rainfall, collected in reservoirs or catchment areas. Rainfall supplies approximately 50% of Singapore's water; the remainder is imported from Malaysia or obtained from recycled water facilities and desalination plants. More NEWater and desalination plants are being built or proposed to reduce reliance on foreign supply.

"Free, Sovereign and Independent" Honduras

Honduras borders the Caribbean Sea on the north coast and the Pacific Ocean on the south through the Gulf of Fonseca. The climate varies from tropical in the lowlands to temperate in the mountains. The central and southern regions are relatively hotter and less humid than the northern coast.
The Honduran territory consists mainly of mountains (~81%), but there are narrow plains along the coasts, a large undeveloped lowland jungle La Mosquitia region in the northeast, and the heavily populated lowland San Pedro Sula valley in the northwest. In La Mosquitia lies the UNESCO-world heritage site Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, with the Coco River which divides the country from Nicaragua. Natural resources include timber, gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron ore, antimony, coal, fish, shrimp, and hydropower.

The Islas de la Bahía and the Swan Islands are part of Honduras. Misteriosa Bank and Rosari Bank, 130 to 150 km north of the Swan Islands, falls within the EEZ of Honduras.

Youngest Island Nation in the Unibarse

Palau, officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2000 miles (3200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the Unite States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest nations. It is sometimes referred to in English under its native name Belau.

Palau's most populated islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu.
The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an Oceanic Island several miles to the South. About two-thirds of the population lives on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the States of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (27 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.

While much of Palau's natural environment remains free of environmental degradation, there are several areas of concern, including illegal fishing with the use of dynamite, inadequate facilities for disposal of solid waste in Koror, and extensive sand and coral dredging in the Palau lagoon. Like the other Pacific island nations, a major environmental threat is global warming and the related rising of sea level. Water coverage of low-lying areas is a threat to
coastal vegetation, agriculture, and the purity of the nation's water supply. Palau also has a problem with inadequate water supply and limited agricultural areas to support the size of the population. The nation is also vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tropical storms. Sewage treatment is a problem, along with the handling of toxic waste from fertilizers and biocides.

Where the East Meets West: Hong Kong

Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where East meets West, a meeting reflected in its economic infrastructure, education and street culture. On one street corner, there may be traditional Chinese shops selling Chinese herbal medicine, Buddhist paraphernalia or bowls of synthetic shark fin soup. But around the next, one may find theatres showing the latest Hollywood blockbuster, an English-style pub, a Catholic Church or a McDonald's. The region's official languages are Chinese and English; signs in both languages are omnipresent throughout Hong Kong. The government, police and most workplaces and stores conduct business bilingually. British rule may have ended in 1997 but Western culture is deeply ingrained in Hong Kong and coexists seamlessly with traditional philosophy and practices of the Orient.

The city's cosmopolitan flavour can also be seen in the wide variety of cuisines available. While different varieties of Chinese selections, especially seafood, are most popular, there are also many European, American, Japanese, Korean, and other restaurants. Ethnic dishes served in cha chaan teng's and dai pai dong's are also popular. The people of Hong Kong take their food seriously and many top chefs make their way to the city to show off their talents to these discerning diners.

While Hong Kong is a global centre of trade, perhaps one of the city's most famous exports is its entertainment industry, particularly in the martial arts genre. Several Hollywood performers originate from Hong Kong cinema—Bruce Lee, Chow Yun-Fat, Jackie Chan to name a few. Behind the camera, Hong Kong filmmakers have also struck fortune in Hollywood such as John Woo, Wong Kar-wai, Tsui Hark and martial arts choreographers who have designed fight scenes in the Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Back in Hong Kong, several homegrown films have also gained international recognition such as Chungking Express, Infernal Affairs, Shaolin Soccer, Rumble in the Bronx and In the Mood for Love. Acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has said he's strongly influenced by Hong Kong action cinema. Hong Kong is also the world's main hub for Cantopop music. While the territory has been home to many stars, karaoke culture is also part of Hong Kong's nightlife.
The Hong Kong government also supports cultural institutions such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Furthermore, the government's Leisure and Cultural Services Department also subsidise and sponsors international performers brought to Hong Kong.

The Heart of Europe: Germany

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is a country in West-central Europe. It is bordered on the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; on the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; on the south by Austria and Switzerland; and on the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Germany is a parliamentary federal republic of sixteen states (Bundesländer). The capital city and seat of government is Berlin. As a nation-state, the country was unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. After its defeat in World War II Germany was divided, and it became reunified in 1990. It is a founding member of the European Union, and with over 82 million people it has the largest population among the EU member states.

The Federal Republic of Germany is a modern great power, a member state of the United Nations, NATO, the G8, the G4 nations and ranks fourth worldwide in defence spending. The Land of Diverse Landscapes

Japan is a country of over three thousand islands extending along the Pacific coast of Asia. The main islands, running from north to south, are Hokkaidō, Honshū (the main island), Shikoku and Kyūshū. The Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, are a chain of islands south of Kyushū. Together they are often known as the Japanese Archipelago.

About 70% to 80% of the country is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. This is due to the generally steep elevations, climate and risk of landslides caused by earthquakes, soft ground and heavy rain. This has resulted in an extremely high population density in the habitable zones that are mainly located in coastal areas. Japan is the thirtieth most densely populated country in the world.

Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, at the juncture of three tectonic plates, gives Japan frequent low-intensity tremors and occasional volcanic activity. Destructive earthquakes, often resulting in tsunamis, occur several times each century. The most recent major quakes are the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake and the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Hot springs are numerous and have been developed as resorts.

The climate of Japan is predominantly temperate, but varies greatly from north to south. Japan's geographical features divide it into six principal climatic zones:

Hokkaidō: The northernmost zone has a temperate climate with long, cold winters and cool summers. Precipitation is not heavy, but the islands usually develop deep snow banks in the winter.

Sea of Japan: On Honshū's west coast, the northwest wind in the wintertime brings heavy snowfall. In the summer, the region is cooler than the Pacific area, though it sometimes experiences extremely hot temperatures, due to the Föhn wind phenomenon.

Central Highland: A typical inland climate, with large temperature differences between summer and winter, and between day and night. Precipitation is light.

Seto Inland Sea: The mountains of the Chūgoku and Shikoku regions shelter the region from the seasonal winds, bringing mild weather throughout the year.

Pacific Ocean: The east coast experiences cold winters with little snowfall and hot, humid summers due to the southeast seasonal wind.

South-west Islands: The Ryukyu Islands have a subtropical climate, with warm winters and hot summers. Precipitation is very heavy, especially during the rainy season. Typhoons are common. The hottest temperature ever measured in Japan - 40.9 degrees Celsius - was recorded on August 16, 2007.

The main rainy season begins in early May in Okinawa, and the stationary rain front responsible for this gradually works its way north until it dissipates in northern Japan before reaching Hokkaidō in late July. In most of Honshū, the rainy season begins before the middle of June and lasts about six weeks. In late summer and early autumn, typhoons often bring heavy rain.

Japan is home to nine forest ecoregions which reflect the climate and geography of the islands. They range from subtropical moist broadleaf forests in the Ryūkyū and Bonin islands, to temperate broadleaf and mixed forests in the mild climate regions of the main islands, to temperate coniferous forests in the cold, winter portions of the northern islands.

The Japanese Kimono

The kimono is the national costume of Japan. Originally the word "kimono" referred to all types of clothing, but it has come to mean specifically the full-length traditional garment worn by women, men, and children.

Kimonos are T-shaped, straight-lined robes that fall to the ankle, with collars and wide, full-length sleeves. Traditionally, unmarried women wore a style of kimono called furisode, which have floor-length sleeves, on special occasions.

Kimonos are wrapped around the body, always with the left side over the right (except when dressing the dead for burial) and secured by a wide belt called an obi, which is tied at the back. Kimonos are generally worn with traditional footwear (especially geta, thonged wood-platform footwear; and zori, a type of thong-like footwear) and split-toe socks (tabi).

Today, kimonos are most often worn by women, and on special occasions. A few older women and even fewer men still wear kimonos on a daily basis. Men wear kimonos most often at weddings, tea ceremonies, and other very special or very formal occasions. Kimonos are also worn by both men and women in certain sports, such as kendo. Professional sumo wrestlers are often seen in kimonos because they are required to wear traditional Japanese dress whenever appearing in public.

Kimono hobbyists in Japan can take courses on how to put on and wear kimonos. Classes cover selecting seasonally and event-appropriate patterns and fabrics, matching the kimono undergarments and accessories to the kimono, layering the undergarments according to subtle meanings, selecting and tying obi, and other topics. There are also clubs devoted to kimono culture, such as Kimono de Ginza.

Get to Know the "Land of the Rising Sun"

Japan is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of China, Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes identified as the "Land of the Rising Sun".

Japan comprises over three thousand islands, the largest of which are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world's tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.

Archaeological research indicates that people were living on the islands of Japan as early as the Upper Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan begins with brief appearances in Chinese history texts from the first century AD. Influence from the outside world followed by long periods of isolation has characterized Japan's history. Thus, its culture today is a mixture of outside influences and internal developments. Since adopting its constitution in 1947, Japan has maintained a unitary constitutional monarchy with an emperor and an elected parliament, the Diet.

A great power, Japan's economy is the world's second largest by nominal GDP after the United States. It is a member of the United Nations, G8, G4 and APEC, with the world's fifth largest defense budget. It is the world's fourth largest exporter and sixth largest importer.
